The Toughest Clients – Ourselves….?

Posted by: Shaun on: April 23, 2011

Recently I had the notion that designing my own logo and identity was a good idea – having discovered the growing need for my own web site -
mainly to show off my work to potential new employers and for a base for my freelancing ventures.

By the way for applying for design jobs these days, the web site is totally invaluable !

—> “Blah blah blah – hey check out my c.v – and look a handy link to my site with work etc” <— so useful, quick and displays a level
of technical competency – even with simple sites or even I would say ‘plug and play’ pre-made portfolios.

So the self-produced I.D – as my own client – surely knowing all about me and what I’m all about this should be easy – but alas this was not to be the case, maybe because there are different constraints – time, money and interest while comparable to a regular clientfed design brief, there is a big difference and having no definite cut off point or deadline to the project allowed unlimited alterations and revisions.

But I felt the main thing was the feeling of the aiming for perfection and individuality and maybe the personal nature of designing your own ID makes it harder to take a step back and be objective. So often I look over sites for design agencies and check out design books that feature ID made for firms by other designers – and think hey hang on isn’t that a bit lame? – not making their own.

But having gone through the process I can see why some my shy away from it… Having represent yourself graphically – in this case creating a logo feels like writing one of those ‘about me’ statements that we all love.

Is this just me ? Seemingly no, an assosiate of mine recently embarked on the same journey of enlightenment and commented on how much harder it was than expected – but coming out the other side was happy with his results…see CMJK for his work. So overall the process was valuable and once I came across a concept I was happy with (final above) and made about a hundred changes and different versions – I think that doing my own design has influenced my approach to client initiated work – the ability to carry out a professional service and take a step back and be objective about designs allows for a better progress and ultimately the final solution should be chosen for all the right reasons.
